I’ve always had an aversion to reading, watching or hearing interviews of favorite actors, authors, musicians, etc. because so often the real person doesn’t measure up to the beauty of the art they produce. Their politics or religion are distasteful, or they’re shallow and self-absorbed, a vacuous mop-head without a lick of sense. From then on, though I may appreciate their craft or art, it has somehow been tarnished. Therefore, whenever I’m asked to provide personal information about myself for readers, a ball of anxiety forms in my stomach as I think: “Okay, the next couple of paragraphs can change forever the way someone views my stories.” Why on earth does a reader want to know about me’ It’s the story that’s important.

So here it is. I’ve been given more blessings in my life than any one person has a right to have. Despite that, I’m a Type A, borderline obsessive-compulsive paranoiac who worries I will never live up to expectations. I’ve got more phobias than anyone (including myself) has patience to read about. I can’t stand talking on the phone, I dread social commitments, and the idea of living in monastic solitude with my husband and animals, books and writing is as close an idea to paradise as I can imagine. I love chocolate, but with that deeply ingrained, irrational female belief that weight equals worth, I manage to keep it down to a minor addiction. I adore good movies. I’m told I work too much. Every day is spent trying to get through the never ending “to do“ list to snatch a few minutes to write.

Despite all these mediocre and typical qualities, for some miraculous reason, these wonderful characters well up out of my soul with stories to tell. When I manage to find enough time to write, sufficient enough that the precious “stillness” required rises up and calms all the competing voices in my head, I can step into their lives, hear what they are saying, what they’re feeling, and put it down on paper. It’s a magic beyond description, akin to truly believing my husband loves me, winning the trust of an animal who has known only fear or apathy, making a true connection with someone, or knowing for certain I’ve given a reader a moment of magic through those written words. It’s a magic that reassures me there is Someone, far wiser than myself, who knows the permanent path to that garden of stillness, where there is only love, acceptance and a pen waiting for hours and hours of uninterrupted, blissful use.

If only I could finish that darned “to do” list.

Thanks to Christine and the community here at Romantic Crush Junkies for allowing me to share my publishing endeavor with all of you. Honestly it seems weird to refer to the anthology in the possessive because I didn't write any part of the book. My contribution was to read about 80 short stories around 5,000 words in length and try to find twenty to place in this collection. We ended up with twenty authors contributed twenty one stories.

The anthology is an extension of the blog in that it is like a recommendation and as readers know, recommendations are both wonderful and awful. They are wonderful because you really want to spread the love for a good book, but they are awful because you are asking someone to spend their hard earned money based on something you've said! That's a lot of responsibility.

Because the anthology is a collection of stories rather than just one, I feel just a little safer because surely there are some stories that every reader can enjoy (well, every reader that likes the steamy, hot, and sexy, right?) But a recommendation is often far more difficult to give than a pass on a book. Because when you tell another reader that book A didn't work for you, the worst that can happen is that the reader misses out on a potentially good read. And while that is bad, it can't be as bad as when you are excited about a book and then a reader buys that book on your recommendation and ends up hating it. But by hearing what your reader friend doesn't like and what she does like helps to refine later recommendations. Feedback becomes the way to become a better recommender of books.

I view reader comments that way. It helps me refine my recommendations to particular readers. Whenever someone asks me for a recommendation, I first ask what types of books they love. Who are their favorite authors? Do they have a particular trope the love (mine is the friends to lovers trope)? I also ask them about things that drive them crazy in books. The more you know, the better you can be at giving a safe recommendation.

But with the anthology, of course, I don't personally know all the readers that are going to buy the book so I had to pick a diverse set of stories that I thought would have broad appeal. Not every story in any anthology pleases the same reader, but hopefully there are enough different stories that are well suited to disparate readers that the reader comes away satisfied that her money was well spent.

Do you believe in magic? Or are you at least fascinated by it? I think a lot of readers are, considering how popular the magic/supernatural/paranormal genres are now. I incorporated magic into FERAL (my December Berkley Heat) in a fun and unique way.

The hero is from the Seminole Nation, and while I was researching Seminole folklore, I came across references to the sapiya, which are magic stones that can jump around like fleas and multiply by themselves. They’re temperamental little objects that will turn on you if you don’t respect their medicine. They need to be fed with animal blood and watered with fresh dew. They can also bring anyone you want to your door.

I got hooked on the sapiya and kept searching for more information about them. But that was pretty much all I uncovered. Nonetheless, I wanted them to be part of my book, so I let them come alive on my pages in whatever manner they chose. That often happens with characters in a book and it was especially interesting with the sapiya. I very much enjoyed the process.

I’ve had experiences with magic stones of my own. Recently, someone tried to purposely foist some negative energy my way and a friend suggested that I get a citrine stone. Citrine is known to dissipate negative energy. It’s also called the “success stone” because it promotes success, prosperity, and abundance.

I ordered one online and when it arrived, I immediately felt better. Just knowing that it was in my possession created a good feeling.

About a month later, I took a trip with a family member and we stopped at a metaphysical store that was located in a quaint mountain town. A perfect setting. A perfect place to acquire more stones.

This is what I got:

Green Tea Agate—A powerful healing stone. It can be used anywhere on the body.

Quartz Crystal—Amplifies the power of any other stone that is carried with it. Healing stone. Meditation stone. Most powerful psychic enhancer and channeling stone.

Rose Quartz—The most powerful love stone. It gives inner peace and helps promote and maintain love.

I also bought a “love” candle. I’m a romance writer, so the “love” candle and “love” stone spoke to me on that level. Of course they spoke to me on a personal level, too.

The final item I purchased was a bundle of sage for smudging. Smudging is a Native American ritual that consists of burning the herb and fanning the smoke to cleanse a person, place or object. I have two grown children with Native blood (from my ex’s side). They are registered with the Muscogee Creek Nation. Obviously, I’ve been close to the Native culture for many years.

So, what does magic mean to you? I think it can be anything you want it to be. Having a romantic friend. Going for a quiet walk. Eating yummy food. Listening to your favorite music. Reading a fairytale. Escaping into the world of a spicy novel.

Choco Wine and Friends

The Birth of the Sassy Seven: Sometimes all it takes to make the world a brighter place is a bottle or ten of choco wine and a handful of friends who make you laugh! That has definitely been my experience with a group of ladies known as the Sassy Seven. We firmed up our spectacular friendship at EC's Romanticon last year and by the end of the conference we simply KNEW that we couldn't just see each other once a year. Funny how these things happen but the group of us just clicked. Age differences or life experiences didn't deter us a bit. In fact, it's our differences that seem to make us stronger and closer. I love that about my friends.

In the beginning, it was Desiree Holt, Cerise Deland, Allie Standifer, Nicole Austin, Samanth Cayto and myself. Little did we know then that we'd add yet another impossibly wonderful friend into the mix. Brenna Zinn came along to complete our zany group and the rest, as they say, is history.

Once we'd determined we just HAD to see each other at least every four months, we plotted, planned and eventually decided to meet at Camp Holt, Des's own beautiful spot in the Texas Hill Country. February brought Allie's birthday and we figured that celebrating the occassion would be the perfect opportunity to get us all together again. That's when I first met the delightfully adorable Brenna. Instant clickification, folks. Love love love her. We all do. Nic flew in from Florida and our very own New Englander, Sam Cayto joined us too. As mentioned in earlier posts, we lolled around the place, laptops open, stuffing our faces, indulging in chocolate wine, and laughing...omg...laughing until tears poured. Yeah, more instant clickification.

Now let me tell you about my friends!

Desiree Holt- feisty, sassy and uber talented. Don't dis her friends or she'll come at you like a spider monkey on crack. I so admire her. She is kind, gorgeous and such a support to all who know her...yes, generous. She is the author of eleventy-gazillion smoking hot books and I credit this amazing woman with my foray into writing erotic romance. Any success I may enjoy, I owe to her. Love doesn't begin to cover how I feel about this wonderful woman.

Cerise Deland- classy, refined and intelligent. Beautiful...mustn't forget beautiful and sooo very talented that I drool when she has a new release. As a friend, CD is a ROCK and believe me, I've leaned against that rock a time or two.

Nicole Austin- one tall, cool customer. Gorgeous as heck with a tomboy attitude that doesn't begin to hide the sexy woman lurking beneath. Nic is quiet (most of the time) and you just know when you speak she is really listening. Talented. (Have you noticed I keep mentioning TALENT? Well, there's a reason for that). I couldn't ask for a truer friend.

Samantha Cayto- quiet, intelligent to the max, classy. I loved her at first meeting and later, as our friendship grew, I was struck by her deep, deep love for her children. Yes, I notice stuff like that and her devotion to them won her a permanent place in my heart. (I don't think I've ever told her that.) There are a million reasons to love this woman (her talent, her warmth) yet this is the thing I would mention first if ever asked to describe WHY I love her so much.

Brenna Zinn- where do I start. She is beyond beautiful...that perfect face, soft smile that makes you just go WOW is so winning that I instantly adored her. I soon leaned that she has a wicked sense of humor that kind of jumps up out of nowhere and smacks you in the face until you simply die laughing. Classy and bawdy all at once..that's Brenna. I could spend hours with her and never, ever be bored. Often she writes, just out of the blue, to ask how I am when she knows I might be stressed by life.

Allie Standifer- yes, she is a stellar writer but I often wonder if she missed her true calling. Allie is possibly the funniest woman on the planet and could have had quite a career as a comedienne. Thankfully, she writes so we can enjoy her amazing talent. What many don't know about Allie (and the reason I love her so much) is that in quieter moments and in times of trouble, she is often the first to call. Loyal to the max! That's my Allie and why she occupies a special place in my heart.

Our Addiction:

Here's the story on our chocolate wine addiction. Yes, we are all happy addicts of the creamy, chocolatey, red-wine based heaven-in-a glass. I'd been introduced to the drink of the gods by one of my daughters college roomies. Fell in love instantly and so when I headed south to Des's place, I picked up half a dozen bottles as my contribution to the festivities. Umm. All I can say is, during our visit to Camp Holt we headed into town for MORE. Lushes, much? :-)

Our Brand New Series:

Perhaps the highlight of the long long weekend was our Toy Party. Yes, sex toys. Toys for grown up girls and boys. Imagine seven drunk-on-their-cute-butts erotica writers among a bevy of toys that whir and buzz!!!! Oh yeah. A perfect recipe for laughter and lots and lots of book ideas. Readers will relate to Hannah’s very real insecurity of having feeling for her best friend. Afraid to voice how she feels in fear she will destroy their friendship. Add the element that she is insecure—slightly- she is too goodie-goodie, and will always be a best bud realm as far as Sean is concerned. Carlyle, as always does a wonderful job laying down the ground work with her constant use of proactive imagery to show the depth of Hannah and Sean’s relationship. At the heart, Carlyle shows readers that the inevitable—Sean and Hannah finally coming together—was in the making from the moment they met. Carlyle also gives readers the opportunity to come along and see how well these to bright charismatic character set an erotic sensual pace with hotter-than-hell love scenes.

I am all about characterization. Great characters keep me up all night fighting, crying, laughing and participating in a journey to see is the hero and heroine get the happy ending I believe they deserve. Carlyle created in WHIZ BANG such flesh and blood characters that I found myself wanting to google up Sean’ O’Brian’s bar to go have a bear and listen to the band playing. Then I realized two things: the bar was set in Texas and being in New York State it would be one heck of a hike; and secondly, Sean’s bar wasn’t real. Carlyle’s characters come to life with her snappy tight dialogue that only enhances a reader’s experience.

Plot, plot and then some more plots is what a reader looks for after skillfully crafted characters, plush settings, and dynamic real-to-life dialogue and explosive love scenes. I love the good girl next door theme. An author has so many ways to go in creating this story. It is a theme used time and time again, but put in the hands of a wonderful story teller the theme comes alive, fresh and new.

Readers familiar with Regina Carlyle’s work will not be disappointed as she gives another exciting delightful romance adventure…quick dialogue…saucy and sensual setting sure enough to make the heat rise off the pages. The boundless overachiever, Emily fights to the bitter end to have what she wants, successful and powerful in a male dominated field (world) that hides her feminine side during the day controlling her world around her. As night descends and in the privacy of her home Emily longs to let go and find the one man that will allow and show her how to appreciate that deeper sexual side of her self.

Kevin Brandt is the perfect man for her. Cayto created a wonderful alpha male that has readers’ believing he is the only Dom that could bring Emily to completion. Kevin is uber alpha to the max, his buffed toned contractor body adds the element of, ‘hello, it is mighty hot in here’ to an an alreadye supercharged romance.

WET RIDE was entertaining to read with its believable characters that were set in a somewhat ordinary situation; powerful woman and a blue-collar guy have one wild weekend only to find that even thoer differences couldn’t keep them apart. It had a solid foundation that was steeped in sexual promise.

For readers just jumping on the BDSM genre track and aren’t sure where to start, then I recommend WET RIDE. It has all the elements of a potent Dom and a very willing ‘sub’ who likes to be flogged, handcuffed and lose complete sexually control that leads readers to a very explosive climax.

The series is based on Petra’s thirty-fifth birthday party thrown by Alix (A LONG TIME COMIN’) that consisted of the sassy seven getting together with loads of wine and a sexy toy party that would spin these wild and saucy stories into motion. Okay, so I was desperately interested to see how these seven’s individual stories played out. One major draw of SLIPPERY WHEN WET is the devilishly sexy tanned and toned architecture, Roman Hunter. I was panting before he knocked on Petra’s window scaring the life out of her. After that, I was a goner. Beside Roman being drop-dead gorgeous, Standifer has created one true-blue down to earth good guy. For years, Roman wanted Petra with an undeniable passion, but she was his best friends at the time. He held true to the golden ‘guy rule’ of not stealing your bro’s girl. He waited patiently for Petra to get over her botched relationship before staking a claim. Oh boy, and what a staking he did.

For readers not familiar with Standifer writing get ready to split a stitch with two wise cracking characters that charm readers with their continues harmless banter. Standifer has a way of breathing life into her characters making them come to life right before her readers’ eyes.

I am all about a book having a plot to go along with feisty characters and steamy love scenes. Not to worry, SLIPPERY WHEN WET has all that and so much more. I found myself more than once having, “awe, I want a man like Roman Hunter” moments. Through the hot and juicy sex and wise cracking quips, Standsifer shows readers the heart of one severely relationship weary woman and the man that proves not all men are scared of that one ten letter word… C-O-M-M-I-T-M-E-N-T.

Standifer is a beautiful storyteller, with strong flesh and blood characters that fairly shimmer with excitement charming readers with a story that delights and entertains with a romance that sparks the pages from beginning to end.

Highlanders never surrender and Colin McPherson is worth being caught by.

It’s the brogue, and those eyes and hell throw in that toned God-like body and Gianna is a goner. I really enjoyed this character because she is a no holds bar kind of heroine who doesn’t apologies for being strong, independent and gojng after what she wants.

It is no wonder Zinn created a contemporary highland warrior to put up against Gianna. Colin is drop dead gorgeous—which he even states himself-, not hard on the eyes, a sculpted buffed toned body that any romance junkie would desire to lick, but it is the brogue that is the clincher…and doesn’t this author know it. Zinn created one sinfully delicious IT man with a heart of gold that cherish his family and falls head over heals in love with the girl next door. All he needs to do know is bring her home to dad and mum.

PRIVATE SHOWING has a wonderful cast of characters, beside the main protagonist. One of the most adorable characters that have been a pleasure to read is Gianna’s octogenarian neighbor, Mr. Norman Crenshaw, who is a little clipped in the brain. Zinn describes him as ‘aimlessly walking around in his thread bearing robe, with his binoculars that he wore routinely around his neck with a leather cord fell from his hands against his skinny chest.” Priceless, is Zinns Mr. Crenshaw, she even goes to describe his robe opening, for readers to view his black, knee high socks and thick sandals, his wife-beater t-shirt and a pair of faded blue boxer shorts. I loved this imagery and could see the eighty year—and recall my grandfather-with this image set before. Zinn's wonderful use of imagery to engage the readers' imagination is intoxicating.

Just when a reader starts to believe, oh, this is just a little story, they get waylaid up-side the head with a powerful love story. PRIVATE SHOWING is an erotic tale, with charming real-to-life characters who struggle with every day situations, which just happen to spice it up with chocolate condoms, red silk scarves. Live life to the fullest, no exceptions, and no excuses is a prominent and potent theme through out Zinn’s story.

One is the fact that, here is a character in her mid forties going through a major transition in her life and she has the wear-with-all to not cow down, but pulls herself up and make her life better. Austin does a beautiful job conveying how her ex hand pecked her into ‘his’ perfect woman. Only to show readers, how genuine Sara was and that she did not need the trappings of high society and money to make a wonderful life for her. Readers will enjoy how uncomplicated Sara and Jacks’s love for the other is. It is everything and everyone around that is the complication life, but these two characters are prominent and out front in showing what and who they truly desire.

Nicole Austin is a wonderful story teller that brings her sassy characters to life with her down-home charms that stir a reader’s imagination through vivid writing. GOOD VIBRATIONS is a fantasy steeped in an incredible descriptive characterization, setting a provocative tone that transcends readers into Austin’ magical world. The character that I connected with is Alix Townsend. Alix is an overachiever, placing work above everyone or thing, forgoing any kind of love life she has used work as a way of keeping relationships at the basic. Relationships are not high on her radar. The men she has been with never connected on anything but the baser need of lust and sex. When Mack enter her stratosphere two years ago, moving in next door neither her brain nor libido ignore him. Alix is a cool confident woman when it comes to litigations, but in the matters of the heart she is clueless. As a soft hearted-hard working woman Alix will draw readers’ attention for the most that woman can relate to Alix in much way.

Mack is ever readers’ perfect package of an uber alpha male hero. Readers will sigh, fan themselves and he might find himself featured in some readers XXX fantasies. He is gorgeous with a smartass attitude that is not snarky but rather endearing. Holt did a beautiful job showing the two sides of both protagonists especial Mack with the way he tries to shake off that he is coming to care for Alix and regard her more than an itch to scratch.

A back yard barbeque, steaks grilling, wine and a bag of sex toys has all the potential for one rockn’ eve and is the perfect setting for Holt’s BOUND AND DETERMINED. What started out as an itch to scratch for both protagonist becomes so much more. I have heard it said that location is everything. In this I would agree, whether in the bedroom, in a mammoth shower stall or on the marble kitchen counter Holt reeves up readers’ imagination and slipping a thoughtful theme of letting yourself go, pummeling through emotional walls and giving over to your own inclinations.

Holt is a wonderful story teller engaging readers with her charm and wit that she showcase to perfection in her well crafted stories, giving readers charismatic characters, engaging dialogue and a sexy love story that heats up the pages from beginning to end.

It is all about Cait Hagerty. What do I mean? Well, DeLand does a wonderful job using dynamic characterization in showing readers the depth of all her characters, especially Cait. Reader, MARRIAGE MOST SCANDAL is one of my favorite Johanna Lindsey’s reads today. Like most fanatic Lindsey fans we are drawn into the sensual imagery this phenomenal charismatic author gives her reader. Her powerful prose of a soldier of fortune confronting past sins and deceits is a story I could not deny myself. Okay, no denial need, because after reading the book blurb I was intrigued to read Sebastian and Margaret’s story. This story pull was the in this very line, “My god, you married a whore.” How could any reader resist. Lindsey is perfect in creating dramatic conflict and when our hero, Sebastian meets is best friend and adversary at the Dueling Rock, well, all hell breaks lose from there. Twelve years later, we met a magnetic alpha male who, I admit, I would pay just to see him walk across the room. Sebastian Townshend is a dynamic character that entreats a reader to come and join the story and see what he will do next. It does not hurt that the perfection of maleness is paired with the beautiful girl next door, Lady Margaret, who once had a tender for the wayward lord. The chemistry in between the protagonist is potent, both in its sensuality and sexuality, enhancing the charge in entertaining Lindsey's fan base.

A Johanna Lindsey book is rife with engaging plots, steamy love scenes, sparkling wit, but none of that would matter without her particular brand of robust characters that burst at the seams with eccentrically bewitching cast of characters. Each characters is a burst of energy from the main characters to the supporting cast. In Lindsey’s Regency era splendor MARRIAGE MOST SCANDAL she sets the tone of the prodigal son return after banishment by way of precise imagery that draws a reader in. Lindsey is a master of the written word and knowing exactly what a readers wants in their character…perfectly flawed but with an ounce of redemption on the side, which she has unfailing given readers time and time again.

There are four main protagonists, Lady Lily and Vincent St. Jerome is told through Lilly’s section but interweaves with Lady Grace and Greyton’s story. I found this to be hypnotic. There is never a point where you are jerked from one heroine’s drama to the next. Danes has uniquely given readers a bird’s eye view into all four characters world simultaneously. The major element of BEING WICKED that was appealing was Danes creative perception of all the main characters. One did not out shine the other. Nor did any one character shadow them other. Danes writing was set to a rhythmic tempo that keeps readers entertained while following along this lusciously provocative novelette.

Let us be honest, characters make the story and with out interesting and charismatic characters readers will close the cover which a reader will file the uninteresting novel under the pile of Never To Be Read Again (NTBRA). And we all know where our NTBRA books go…the library, which in the end we feel like we have made a contribution for the day. Well, BEING WICKED is a book that will never find your NTBA pile or the library. Danes gives readers a groups of saucy sassy characters that stretch our emotional strings by taking readers into a world that many know nothing about, but have read numerous times. Danes displays the rich and royal world of Regency England with all the decadent sins and vices that was at their finger tips.

Danes spirits her readers off into this eclectic intoxicating adventure indulging readers’ senses and electrifying the need to participate in this extraordinary crafted story.

Fiction is a wonderful genre. Where else can readers find themselves at a Cyprian ball looking for your brother and finding yourself in the arms of a devilish gorgeous rake waiting to make all your fantasies come true? ROUGH PLAY is a BDSM readers dream. I admit that this is not my first ride at the BDSM rodeo, so I know what I like and do not like. But, this my first time reading author Christina Crooks. I admit I was not quite sure what to expect when ROUGH PLAY arrived on my door step from Kensington. The element of this book that drew me to open the cover and to begin to read was the fact it was a erotic contemporary BDSM. I am of an inquisitive mind, so I was curious to see what this author came up with. I was pleasantly surprised that down on her luck hamburger flipping trying to start an new business and heroine of the story Charlotte was what drew me in. Charlotte is an every woman’s kind of female protagonist that we as individuals can relate to. It was the fact she had to work a dead end fast food job by day—polyester uniform and visor included—and by night try to appease the one client she has. This might sound pathetic but there is a little quirk that Charlotte has—which I will not share, you’ll just have to read it to find out—that actually makes her very proficient in the dating world profession. She is a quirky and lovable character that even though she has not had the easiest time of it lately Charlotte does see the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Master Martin is an alpha male to die for all wrapped up in a physical toned body, rugged features and a deep intoxicating voice that will have reading ready to submit. His vitality in strength is not only skin deep. Master Martin has depth as a character which reaches out to readers time and again. His presence is constant even when he is not on the page. Master Martin’s personality had certain elements that draws a reader in were his fierce loyalty and care for others which is shown in the care for his ill mother. His understanding and emotional strength is also prominent in his treatment of Charlotte.

ROUGH PLAY does not stand by its cover alone but by the feral and charismatic characters that grace its pages. I will say that beyond the main protagonist Charlotte and Master Martin there is a creatively charming cast of characters just waiting for readers to come and meet them. You have Gail, who is one stubborn client and has a list that no mere mortal man could ever meet. Then there is Charlotte’s ex that even though he is gorgeous readers would be hesitant to meet him in a dark alley any time soon. A few characters that jump of the page is fellow worker at the fast food joint, Ratty—Subspace name and his Dominatrix, Amethyst who give a one eighty and crack you up while doing so.

ROUGH PLAY deals with quite a few elements while interweaving plots and subplots seamlessly. Remembering that this is a pure fiction it was not easy to get caught up in the abduction plot, the slave trafficking. Going in and out of Subspace’s Catacombs was an intricate part to help facilitate the underworld of not only BDSM but a erotic fictional game in likes of Dungeons & Dragons was brought to life. If there was a theme it would be believe in yourself, your strengths and you can come through anything. Trusting in your own beliefs and perception will bring you father than believing in nothing at all.

If you are looking for a full fledge erotic suspense fantasy read than ROUGH PLAY by Christina Crooks is the book for you. You will travel through a fantasy world of the others making a will enjoy learning all the ins and outs of some very smart and eclectic characters that have the use saucy and creative dialogues with a few plots that will keep you engaged four fun filled hours to come.
